Reconstruction

of First Mass Serial Buildings

This project was designed as part of the City's program for reconstruction of the first mass serial buildings (F.M.S.B.).Thousands of residential units were built during the period of Nikita Kruschev's government. Under that program housing was built in large areas of the city and along major streets. The typical building has five stories and is made of white brick. The facade is  ugly, energy efficiency is poor and the floor plans in the flats are bad.

The idea of reconstruction of this buildings is utopian but architects wonder.

In the new project the main load bearing construction was preserved, mansard floors were raised with their own load bearing columns and perimetral gallery with a new facade was installed.

Module House

The base concept of this project was modality. The plan contains a central cylinder that is the core of the module. This is public space with the entrance, stairs and rubbish chute.

There are three wings with flats connected to that core. The floors are not all the same because of the non-linear section. Connecting these modules generates a honeycomb, and inside of each cell there is a big courtyard.

The house consisted of two volumes, each with a unique function. A white, horizontal cylinder contains a "day zone" with the kitchen, main room, music hall and an office on the top floor, and a garage, laundry and utility area on the first floor.

The second volume is a black cone. It contains the "night zone," including the bedrooms, a children's room and a large bathroom.
